As with taking any type of drug, vardenafil can potentially interact negatively with some other types of medications. Vardenafil is taken for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and sometimes even for pulmonary hypotension.
Alpha Blockers
In some research studies, people taking vardenafil with alpha blockers for high blood pressure, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, these problems decreased. Some men did experience dizziness, lightheadedness, of fainting when standing up from either a lying or sitting position. Your doctor may lower your dosage of vardenafil if you are also taking an alpha blocker.
Arrhythmia Medication
Men taking quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, or sotalol to treat abnormal heart rhythm should not take vardenafil. Combining any one of these medications with vardenafil will increase the risk of dangerous arrhythmia called QT prolongations.
Grapefruit Juice
It is possible that grapefruit juice can interact with vardenafil by increasing the level of vardenafil in your blood which will in turn increase your risk of certain side effects. Though studies have not been done to see if grapefruit juice interacts with vardenafil, it may be advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while taking vardenafil until there is more information available.
Antibiotics and Antifungals
Talk to your doctor if you are using any type of antibiotics or antifungals before you add vardenafil because it may increase the levels of vardenafil in your blood increasing risk of side effects. People taking these medications may have to take an adjustable dose of 2.5 mg or 5 mg in a 24 hour period of time, this depends on the particular antibiotic or antifungal and the dosage of these medications.
Taking Vardenafil with nitrates
Vardenafil releases nitric oxide into the blood decreasing blood pressure and allowing the smooth muscle of the penis to relax. If you are taking any type of nitrate including “poppers” you should not take vardenafil. Risk of severe low blood pressure can occur when taking the two nitrates together.
Protease Inhibitor
Taking protease inhibitors with vardenafil can increase the amount of the vardenafil in your blood and will increase your risk of side effects. You can take vardenafil if you are taking protease inhibitors, but you may need a lower dosage of the drug. Always talk to your doctor before taking vardenafil in you are currently taking a protease inhibitor.
It is possible that vardenafil could interact dangerously with other types of drugs, therefore it is very important you discuss this with your health care provider. Always tell your doctor what medications you are taking including over the counter medications. It is possible that these drug combinations be fatal, again it is very important to talk to your doctor before taking vardenafil.
