What is Erectile Dysfunction?
Before you can decide if you have erectile dysfunction, you must first understand what exactly it is. Many of us are already familiar with the results of erectile dysfunction, but may not know how it happens.
The penis contains three chambers, two of which are paired on top, these are called the corpora cavernosa and they run together along the length of the penis. The other chamber is on the bottom and is called the corpora spongiosum and contains the urethra which carries the urine out of the bladder into the penis and out of it when you urinate. All of the chambers in the penis are surrounded by an elastic membrane called the tunica albunginea.
The cambers contain a spongy tissue inside which is the smooth muscle not unlike the smooth muscles in the bowel and bladder. The smooth muscle contains fibrous tissues, veins, arteries, and spaces. When the penis is flaccid in its normal state, the arteries are small and the spaces are collapsed.
An erection starts with mental and physical stimulation. Impulses from the brain and nerves tells the endings in the penis to release nitric oxide causing the smooth muscle to relax and enlarging the spaces allowing blood flow in and fill them. The blood creates pressure making the penis expand and become rigid. Once the spongy tissue is full of the blood, an erection occurs. Blood is trapped inside the chambers when the tunica albunginea compresses the veins sustaining the erection.
When impotence occurs, the smooth muscle in the penis cannot relax, the chambers stay constricted not allowing blood flow into the penis.
Causes of Erectile dysfunction
There are two different things that can cause ED. One of them is physiological problems; if a male is stressed, tired, worried about work or anything else that can trigger stress and other negative thoughts, he might not be able to achieve an erection.
The other cause of erectile dysfunction is medical problems, diabetes and kidney disease can cause ED as well as multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, vascular disease and chronic alcoholism. These diseases account for about 70 percent of all cases of ED.
